Bermuda Development Agency

The Bermuda Development Agency is on a mission to build sustainable and equitable economic growth and prosperity in Bermuda. I worked alongside Helios Interactive to help create a virtual reality experience that would help introduce people to what the BDA’s mission is, and how it can assist you in becoming a part of Bermuda’s community.

My Role

UX designer: discovery, design, user flow.

Bringing an in-person event online

The BDA wanted to have a rich virtual reality experience for an in-person event in the Summer of 2021, but the rise of Omicron caused them to partially take the experience online for attendees who couldn’t or weren’t comfortable attending the event in person. Our goal was to create a simple, elegant portal that allows users to access BDA information, live meetings and presentations.

User flow

The user flow is such a crucial part of the VR experience. The user must always feel like their path and decisions are intuitive and won’t take them too far down the rabbit hole without a simple path back. While this user flow is pretty simple, we worked hard to ensure its simplicity.

For this experience, the focus lay on letting visitors explore the space and find their way to: live streaming events, live zoom meetings, in-depth learning about the BDA, and info about the event’s sponsors.

Wireframing
the Portal

The most important part of wireframing a VR project like this is communicating clearly to the client what they can expect to see as the project progresses. VR spaces can take a lot of hours and people power to complete. So it’s imperative that the client has a complete understanding of where we are taking the project before we begin creating in the 3D space.

In addition, it’s imperative to be clear in the UX documentation when handing off the entire project to an outside development team.

The Result

While I did not work on the UI or visual design portion of this project, it is always super exciting to see the finished project in action.

LOOKING BACK

Even though my contributions to this project were for desktop and mobile online use only, this was a great introduction to working in the VR space. And I’m happy that the experience worked well for the online attendees.
