Leatherman custom experience

At Leatherman, we wanted to give our customers the ability to create a tool unique to them. Something more than just an engraved name. An experience where you can add artwork, custom fonts, or even your own photos and designs to the tool of your choosing.

Making your tool one-of-a-kind.

My Role

Lead designer: discovery, user research, design.

Knowing our customers.

Leatherman’s fans are a unique set. They can range from the diehard collectors that must have at least one of each tool, to the daily worker that needs a dependable tool to keep on their hip for when the need arises. It was very important for us to create an experience rich enough to appeal to our rabid fans, while being quick and efficient for the everyday user.

make it your own

We created a landing page that would function as an introduction to the possibilities of what our customization experience would be capable of, as well as, showing the customer a synopsis of what to expect on their customizing journey.

Note:

For this part of the project, DemandPDX was our development agency, and I am grateful for their collaboration and expertise.

the customizer

Our custom experience was not the first one of its kind out there. So the challenge here was to create something that was unique to Leatherman and our customers, while being easy to use. We wanted our users to intuitively feel like they knew how to use it as they arrived, as well as, having complete control over the look and feel of their final creation.

just play

Working with the amazing digital agency, Pollinate, we created an immersive experience of customization that included three-dimensional control, and libraries of ready-made graphics and patterns.

Note:

For the customizer, Pollinate was our partner, and I am grateful for their collaboration, expertise, and donuts during meetings.

the result

This project was the perfect intersection of: fun to work on, rewarding in the end, and involved so many learning opportunities for me. It’s still fun for me to go to the Leatherman site and just create unique designs on the tools that I know so well.
